The 42 Fantastic Places You Must See Before You Die

26. Yuanyang Rice Terraces – Yunnan, China

The paddy fields in Honghe Hani, located in the Yuanyang region of China’s Yunnan province, are on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. Honghe Hani rice fields have a history of about 1200 years. The core area is Yuanyang County, but the fields are spread over the cities of Honghe, Jinping, and Lüchun.

There is a reason why rice fields are built on the slopes in China, where rice has been grown since 3500 BC. When large manpower was needed to ensure that the water covering the paddy fields was constantly changed, they found a solution to this problem by constructing the fields in the form of embankments on sloping lands on the slopes to ensure the continuous flow of water.
