The 42 Fantastic Places You Must See Before You Die

24. Northern Lights, Scandinavia

You don’t have to cross deserts, embark on an adventure in Africa, or get lost in the rainforest to witness one of the world’s most mysterious natural phenomena. The Northern Lights, which you can watch twice a year from certain parts of the Scandinavian countries, attract tourists from many different countries of the world.

This optical miracle, named after the Dawn Goddess Aurora and whose scientific name is Aurora Borealis, is the natural radiation that occurs in the sky as a result of the interaction of the earth’s magnetic field and the charged particles from the sun. The Northern Lights appear each year, first between March and April, and then between September and October.
